I think that freebytes better reflect memory requested by Director, not
necessarily the memory really used by the system. For example, i experienced
a memory build up problem when playing a big (+300 !!!) number of avi or
mpeg files on Windows machines (98 or 2000) altough freebytes did'nt
reflected it.

This build up is simply caused by a Windows bug with digital video files
(Media Player or Quick Time, as reported on Macromedia web site). Each time
you unload a video file, one more small part of the RAM (say 20 to 200 ko,
depending of file size) remains unavailable to other application. No cure
for this until you reboot.  :-(

I wonder if this kind of problem only occur with digital video or other
media types...
