The biggest plus to a 3270 console is for the folks running in LPARs. There is curses support for them (so things like vi *sortof* work, but the programs were never designed for a half-duplex interrupt driven interface like the 3270 and thus are excruciatingly painful to use in this environment). Don't even TRY to run emacs... Think of what it is like to use a ADM3a, for those of you who remember those animals. This isn't that much fun.
