If you use OS/2's TCP/IP, it takes a dedicated card (OS/2 driver restriction).

However, if you just want to use the MP3000 Console sessions, it does not
require a card.  The card selected for these sessions in MPTS is something
like "no card available".

The "built in" card can be used for either the OS/2 TCP/IP stack or as a 3172
to your S390 operating system.

Also, you do need to specify "D" in the MPTS for DIX instead of the default
"I".

The two red books on the MP3000 are a good place to start.

BTW, I'm using multiple ethernet cards in the MP3000.  At OS/2 boot time, I
get a message like "IOCNF.......".  I know there is a simple fix for this.  I
recall reading it.  But I can't find it.  I think this is being generated by
the IPCONFIG command in the STARTUP.CMD when the IP stack is being brought up.
