It pretty much boils down to an attempt at saving money, but without dragging in 'server consolidation' terminology, there is not much else I can add.
One of the main focuses of Linux for S/390 is to run applications on the mainframe that would normally need additional servers to run. Case in point, a site that is implementing a new version of an ERP package. They are running it on two existing AIX servers. One of the servers is too under powered for the new version and the other one would not be able to handle the load of running both versions simultaneously. They need to buy two additional AIX systems for the project. One of the older systems will go unused and the other one 'should' be powerful enough to run the part of the application that is not Linux for S/390 ready. The web server and the database serving (DB2 UDB) will be done on Linux for S/390, saving the need to buy two additional AIX servers. Aside from DB2, there is a whole pile of open source software available that can take the place of 'some' existing machines on your network. Some of the rest might be able to be replaced with commercial software that is available for Linux for S/390. Server consolidation is the main focus of Linux, but it can be a considerable money saver, which looks good to your management and the bottom line.
