Craig,

Check out Jim Elliott's Mainframe Linux Update that he gave at SHARE:
http://linuxvm.org/present/index.html  He talks about

Slide 11 shows the results of an IBM survey that asked what people were
already using Linux for, and what they planned to use it for in the next two
years:
Web server - 51% -> 76%
Web Application Server - 34% -> 61%
Firewall Server - 35% -> 60%
E-mail server - 40% -> 59%
File and Print Server - 39% -> 59%
Database Server - 29% -> 55%
Development System - 29% -> 43%
Workgroup Server - 18% -> 40%
Transaction Server - 11% -> 22%

They didn't list DSN, FTP, etc., but those are all popular uses as well.
The email server, file and print server roles in particular can save you
some serious bucks by eliminating Microsoft Client Access Licenses. If your
shop uses MS Mail or Exchange Server, Bynari's Insight server in combination
with sendmail can provide the same functionality at a fraction of the price.
The same is true of using Samba to provide file and print serving.

Slides 27 & 28 talks about using virtual Linux systems for development and
testing.

Slide 29 shows application serving to the public internet by using a DMZ,
etc.

Slide 31 shows how you can eliminate an entire tier of discrete servers with
Linux/390 and DB2 Connect.

As Rich said, if you want more information, you can contact me offline as
well.

Subject: How to use Linux/S390

"Inquiring minds want to know."

Please help!
Management wants to know how we can use Linux/S390.

We have OS/390 V2.10, CICS/TS 1.3, IMS/VS DB V6.1.0, DB/2 V6.1.0 on 9672-R76

and MS Windows network. I have SuSE in one LPAR.

Other than "server consolidation", how can (or why should) we use
Linux/S390?

Thanks,
    Craig
