Greetings;
I wasn't suggesting doing *everything* with linux facilities,
just those needed to eliminate a certain very costly software
package.
SPXTAPE would continue to be used to backup all spool files,
including all the various SDF.
Also, I have a one-pack VM system that is DDR to tape, doesn't
everybody? That starts the process and enables starting a minimal
linux system which continues on.
The unknown part, and the difficult parts, are those after
"enables starting." But in general, anything that can be backed up
can be restored. It is the hows that causes the ulcers!
Thanks,
Dennis

Oh, and when you have sorted this out and planned, remind me to ask a
question to the list about "Restoring VM with only Linux facilities" ;-)
You would need a process where you can start one of your Linux guest native
in the LPAR (from the CD maybe) and use that to restore your VM volumes.
And you should probably be prepared to lose spool and NSS files, but that
may be something you can live with if you run mainly Linux guests.
I do see that it could be attractive for the "Linux only" z/VM shops, but I
don't think we have all bits and pieces ready now.
