That is what I've been thinking.
VSE/EPIC has an auto attach feature.
Basically boils down to any given guest wants a tape drive, it should
politely ask VM for it, accept whatever it is given with a thank you and
give it back nicely when done.
Guests are guests, they should co operate with the host.

Parden the interruption. I would like to get some clairification about
just who is affected. I've been following these posts...
When I use tape directly from Linux (Suse), I attach/detach the tape
drives. (Of course, running under z/VM) I don't seem to have any of
the problems being discusses.
I do recall something about z/OS and LPARs being able to dynamically use
tape drives and, perhaps, this is the kind of use that this type of
problem surfaces with.
So, does this problem affect VM types that attach/detach?
Perhaps I've been kidding my self that my Linux tape usage hasn't been
causing problems.
Perhaps Dynam/T has been correcting these problems.
Perhaps Operations been correcting these problems and not telling me
(yea....right..that will be the day).
