I am not sure whether this has been brought up again in this thread, but one popular and effective way to mess up the SLES 8 install is to forget running the YaST.sshinstall after the first boot. That's the portion that asks you (again) to set the root password, add other users, etc. You're prompted to run that by some messages during the shutdown after the first time you ran YaST, and it is easy to miss. The system appears to be sort of working but does strange things.
