i'm about 100 feet from the mainframe :-)
i was thinking it may have something to do with having to use a second
test lpar as a bridge to the lan, but with the cpu 50% busy, both lpars
will be able to get all the cpu they want.

It's possibly network latency, as opposed to network busy. How far away
(network-wise) are you from the system?
In any case, this is why I prefer software that doesn't force you to use
X-based tools. Most of my systems are _very_ remote from me, and I can't
stand the slowness.
You might consider installing VNC. My understanding is that it isn't as
bad
as "normal X," what ever that means.

is there any advice available on speeding up xwindows apps on the
mainframe?
i've tried starting gnome/nautilis to further configure my system, and
it's
pretty near impossible due to the sluggish windows. it takes 4-5 minutes
for
the basic desktop to show up. menu's take a minute to show up.
mainframe cpu is only running 50%
network card is running 1%
pc is 95% idle
i've tried a couple of shareware x-servers for my pc. same result. i can't
think where the slowdown could be. i understand that X isn't the best
thing
for running on the mainframe, but i thought it would at least be somewhat
useable to configure the system.
