Line mode?  There's always ed.

I'm not man enough to use ed, myself, so instead I use "sed", "cat",
and "echo".

And I thought _I_ was a luddite.  Never forget "dd".

BTW,. the nice thing about Unix (and Linux) is that there are usually
at least 17 different ways to get a specific task done... and none
of them is _wrong_.  Inelegant, perhaps, but not _wrong_.
