I'm pondering acquiring a Multiprise 3000 to replace my Alphaserver 4000 as web, email, and CVS server. I plan to run Linux on it, maybe in two LPARs (production and test). I'd like to not spend a few kilobucks in the process, though I recognize this might be a pipe dream. Anyone know where I might find such?
The main reason I'm considering the MP3000 over an Opteron running Hercules is the superior RAS that I'd expect from the mainframe. If that, too, is a pipe dream, I'd appreciate hearing about that too. Processing power is about the same; I'm measuring sustained throughput of 55-60 MIPS on a dual dual-core Opteron 275. Getting away from PC-class hardware is the attraction. OTOH, I know that it'll suck up more power than the PC - but I'm not so sure whether it'll be more than the Alpha. Other thoughts? I know I've raised this before, but the thought keeps floating to the top of my brain. -- Jay Maynard, K5ZC http://www.conmicro.cx http://jmaynard.livejournal.com http://www.tronguy.net http://www.hercules-390.org (Yes, that's me!)
