Should be > rather simple since the HMC itself is running Linux. You can boot distro Linux CDs from the HMC using the "IPL from DVD" function (a single object operation, I think). Yes, there is an FTP server on the HMC that can be used to complete the Linux distro install. The firewall on the HMC can be used to restrict the hosts that are permitted to connect. On your point about PoCs, if your target environment is LPAR-only, then leaving z/VM out of a PoC is fine. Otherwise your PoC didn't "prove" verify much since the operational and performance characteristics are just a tad different on z/VM than in an LPAR.
