Since the doctor ordered ...
What I've done is copy snap-shot filesystem images
over to P/390 and things like that and present them as 3370
to Linux.  Works immediately.  (P/390 support complained about
lack of an IBM label on the disk,  but otherwise no problem.)

I've also put ISO 9660 filesystems onto FBA
(both emulated via SCSI and VDISK).  Works directly.
No problems.  No changes to Linux.  It's just another filesystem.
I believe I had a bootable CD too,  but that was in another life.
