Maybe what is needed is a native interface to the DVD? <GRIN> Actually,
I could see some use to have a DVD as a native I/O device. Especially a
burner. Of course, it is easier and cheaper to put the DVD burner on a
PC and just have the System z Linux ship a file to that PC for burning.

It might be possible now to burn CDs (maybe DVDs too) using cdrecord (or
whatever the liberated versions called on your system).

cdrecord supports burning CDs on remote systems over the LAN.

To access remote SCSI devices, you need to prepend the SCSI
device name by a remote device indicator. The remote device
indicator is either
       REMOTE:[EMAIL PROTECTED]: or REMOTE:host:
A valid remote SCSI device name may be: REMOTE:[EMAIL PROTECTED]: to
allow remote SCSI bus scanning or REMOTE:[EMAIL PROTECTED]:1,0,0 to access the
SCSI device at host connected to SCSI bus # 1,target 0 lun 0.

It may work with DVDs, using DVD-enabled versions of cdrecord.
