Well, I'm with Bruce on this.  Linux should be able to read the volser
from any VOL1-format label, regardless of who created it.  If there are
other label formats Linux can read the label from (CMS1, LNX1, ....)
that's fine and good, but that doesn't absolve it from being able to read
and write a simple 80-character VOL1 label with a dummy VTOC.

Being the ever-open-minded person I'm known to be, I'm willing to be
convinced otherwise, but that's going to be a steep hill to climb in this
case.
