Alan, The problem with that is that if you don't have the volume with a specific VOLSER, you can't build the z/VM directory entry and log on the machine to format the DASD with a proper VOLSER. Catch-22.

If you're going to format a volume dasdfmt, there's no need to use ICKDSF. Sounds like your minidisk is 1-END instead of 0-END and so doesn't see a volser on the minidisk.
