Hello Wayne, well I hope you have fun with learning as I have within the last few 
weeks. One thing that has helped me was the search engine on the Linux-Hams archive. 
Also just discussed there was a thread on supported serial cards.

I make use of the Intelligent Digiboard 4 port card. The beauty of the card is that it 
does not burn an interrupt (no IRQ) and is supported by the Linux kernel.

Hope that 486 will handle the Y2K rollover date? we just tossed several here. You 
could always turn back the clock to 1972 and have 28 more years of computing pleasure,
