Thanks for the many comments.  I did not realise that the kernel and
support within linux was now at 
the stage that it is possible to fully implement all the tasks I had
previously left to jnos/uknos.   It seems
sensible to use the tools included rather than burden the system with the
overhead of a full application.
In terms of satisfying my users I can be certain that they will be happy so
long as nntp and smtp arrive 
on their systems.  They don't worry how.  Very few actually telnet or ax25 
'log on' to use the system like
an old W0RLI bbs.
I would be glad of any advice as to setting the system up, at least for the
basics.
