I have recently been thinking about do exactly that. ICOM's protocol is well documented; I have the CI-V manual in PDF format here. I now use a Yaesu though and haven't investigated the protocol there yet. I do know that ICOM's is very similar between radio models, while Yaesu's differs a lot between models.
