Bonjour Bruno,

After reading carefully the document :
  http://ruff.cs.jmu.edu/~beetle/ragefury.htm

we succeeded to startx.

There is also some information in french at:
http://www.multimania.com/gijoe/

What we did (I use redhat 6.0 distribution):
 0. install the rpm XFree86-FBDev-3.3.3.1-49
 1. take the XF86Config from
    http://www.uno.edu/~adamico/banshee/files/XF86Config
    and put it in /etc/X11
 2. remove the link /etc/X11/X
 3. create the good link
ln -s /usr/X11R6/bin/XF86_FBDev /etc/X11/X
 4. patch /etc/lilo.conf to add a line (just
before "read-only" in the vmlinuz part)
        VGA=ASK
 5. run lilo
 6. reboot
 7. be carefull at boot time to type a ENTER and
then a number corresponding to the value you want
    (refer to
    http://metalab.unc.edu/LDP/HOWTO/mini/Vesafb-5.html)
 8. startx should work.

We are still busy to improve our configuration.

Anyone know how to configure the kernel to support this (or if it's
possible)? I'm currently at v2.2.9.

This should work; I have a similar setup here: I have Win95
and OS/2 on an IDE drive and linux on an SCSI drive. OS/2's
Boot Manager resides on the IDE drive and can boot all three
systems without difficulty. I imagine lilo ought to be able
to do the same.

I have installed Red Hat Linux 5.0 on an old 486SX 25 with one of those
586/133 upgrade thingies with 8 M of RAM and a 406Mb HD. It's running X as
well but it is very slow.

Any one know if Linux works with those cheapo Winchip processors?

This is a common problem with Netscape. Check your colour depth, as
netscape has problems with 24bpp. If you try 8, 16 or 32 bpp it should
be OK.

Strangley this appears to be a problem only with XFree86 as the guy
who owns X-inside said that it doesnt occur using their x-server.

Is there any way to set the HD to that PIO or, even better, to set it

Got the problem resolved. Just needed to enable the bios cache, (thought I had
already done that!!). Prior to fixing it I did try removing all but 8M of memory,
without effect.

Seems, you don't have set the "DefaultColorDepth" of the X11
server to 32 bit. If your graphic card has at least 8 MB and
your resolution is not larger than 1280x1024, you can simply
fix this by editing your "/etc/XF86Config" file (as root).
Logout and "restart the X server".

But don't complain me, if your graphic system doens't work later.

Regards,
        Klaus.

We recently gutted a computer at work. I was able to snag a GW2k
Telepath 28.8 (internal) modem from it, sans manual.

I'm not sure I have the jumper settings correct. Anybody have a
manual and willing to enlighten me?

For the record, the modem has two sets of jumpers, labelled in the
following manner:

  1 2 3 4 2 3 4 5 6 7

I have a 56k modem and when I installed redhat 6.0 I had the problem of not
getting the UART set.

If you type
setserial

it will display the information about the serial ports. I found that the serial
port with my modem had a uart of uknown.

I typed

setserial /dev/XXXX uart 16550a
/dev/XXXX=serial device

which set the uart on the serial port and my modem started working.

I don't know if you have the same problem, but it sounded similar to the problem
I had.

Interesting project! What you don't say is how many files you have per
directory. This is particularly important for NT.

I feel that if your data is important and you want a file server that comes
up and stays up, you should discount NT immediately. I have heard some
horror stories about NT with very large directories -- as a test, try
creating 100,000 small files in a single directory and pointing Windows
Exploder at it. You will find that you can go and have a cup of coffee and a
cigarette while the screen updates! This sort of activity affects the
performance of the server as a whole.

While I am a fan of Linux, but I would think twice about this sort of task
for it. This leaves (IMHO) only HPUX and Solaris from your list. My personal
preference is for Solaris, but I don't think that's critical and I cannot
really justify it.

Furthermore, I would resist using intel-based hardware. PCs are just not
built to the same standard as most of the "real" Unix boxes from Sun, HP,
IBM, SGI, etc. The one exception that comes to mind would be the Sequent
range. This brings in some new flavours of Unix (AIX, Irix, Dynix, etc), and
pretty much any of them will do a good job, and you seem to be open to this
- maybe you should look for a good deal on a second-hand box (ex-rentals are
often a good buy) rather than going for intel just to save money.

Lastly, consider if a 64 bit hardware/OS combination may benefit. UltraSPARC
+ Solaris 7 is one option here, but so is DEC Unix (or whatever Compaq is
calling it now) on an Alpha box.
