Look in the monitor's manual for the Hsync and Vsync values. They're on
the page of tiny print where they list various technical details on the
monitor. Start Xconfigurator (actually, xf86config is better, but
whatever you want) and when you get to the "monitor" section, put in the
Hsync and Vsync values you obtained from the manual.

BTW, if you're running the Fury Pro, you may need Xfree86 >= 3.3.6.
The Rage 128 chipset didn't work all that well in 3.3.5 IIRC.

i've got a token ring card running in my RedHat 6.2 machine. i load it via a
module

my conf.modules looks like

alias tr0 ibmtr
options ibmtr io=0xA0 irq=10

from your error messages it looks like a resource conflict. does the card have
any DOS utililties for testing and setting the IO/IRQ?

i'm using an IBM Auto16/4 ISA card. IBM LANStreamer's aren't supported.

check http://www.redhat.com/support/hardware/intel/62/rh6.2-hcl-i.ld-11.html
under Sction 11.8 Other forms of networking to make sure you are using a
supported card.

Thanks for all your kind answers. Actually, I just needed to remove
/lib/modules/2.2.16. Then proceed with configuration, make and a final
depmod -a.
        It's working fine no.

Your answers also worked with this issue. Just enabling
"Use real mode APM bios call to power off" was enough. I hadn't selected
it in the first place because I misunderstood the "help" paragraph,
thinking that APM was only useful for laptops.
This doesn't work with SMP machines, however. And one of the servers
involved in the upgrading is a biprocessor. This server is attatched to
an UPS, which is programmed to command a "halt" to the computer when
some conditions are met (e.g. some minutes running on UPS, or it is
close to run out of battery). After the machine is powered down, the UPS
doesn't supply more power. But if the machine doesn't switch off
properly, the UPS will discharge wastefully. Is there any way to force
the use of APM even on SMP machines? I could enforce its activation when
the shutdown process is started.

I just finished installing a Promise Ultra66 card today. My
suggestions:

1. Read the Ultra-DMA HOW TO available on the web. The instructions
for the Ultra33 card about passing the paramaters to the kernel should
enable you to boot from the floppy and use the hard drive with the
Ultra66 card.

2. The issue is not the version of some distribution of Linux, but
the version of the Kernel. You need to upgrade the Kernel to v.2.2.18
and apply the patch 'ide .2.2.16.all.20000722' to the source before you
build it.

3. Then you may need to edit 'lilo.conf' by hand and run /sbin/lilo.
I found that my system would not boot. It just printed LI and
stopped., untill, I added the 'linear' global paramater.

Everything now works (ant it only took three days to figure it out!)

I picked up some dual processor boards for cheap and I was wondering if
I can use an AMD K6-II 266 (even if it will only go to 233) in these
boards.
The manual says something about the CPUs needing an APIC (I think)
controller in them.

Does anyone know anything about this?

Thanks,
When I type ifconfig as you said I get no messages.
Both nics are working because I can ping them.

The TCP tab I was talking about was in
"Control Center"->"Network"->"TCP/IP"
This brings up 3 tabs:
"Identification", "IP_address", "DNS_Server"
This could be Corel Linux specific and still doesn't recognize my second
card.

Next step: sound card.

As I said last night, hit the SuSe site and get 'xsis', I've been
running it on a sis6326 based 8 meg card for over a year now, dateing
back to RH5.1 and the original 3.3.3.1 KDE install that didn't work
until I out this driver in in place of the S-VGA driver. With it, most
of the crippling flags can be turned off. Its still not the fastest
card, but thats a moving target given this is subject to Moores Law.

Cheers, Gene

A quick Deja search turned up the following sites that might prove
helpful:
http://server.hellug.gr/LUGistics/en/pub/QA_articles_main.php3
http://linhardware.com/
http://linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/

There doesn't seem to be an official FAQ, unlike c.o.l.misc. Seems odd

Forget it. The K6 series are not SMP-capable. If you want to do SMP on
the cheap, that's what Celerons and the Abit BP6 are for. If you want
SMP power and are prepared to drop cash, get dual PIIs. If you want to
wait a while, Athlon SMP sets should be out in a few months.

You don't have to understand most of those numbers to get a working X
windows. Dot clocks have to do with how fast data is send by the video
card to the monitor. You cannot transmit faster than the monitor
bandwith I believe. Furthermore, a monitor has restrictions on the
horizontal and vertical sync rate. In the past video card had a
limited range of dot clock rates but every new card will work within a
wide range and usually the monitor is the limit. You can tweak a
working modeline using 'xvidtune' visually. XFree will winnow out the
modeline you provided for those that match the monitor capability. I
have a CTX VL700 and it works with no problem.

I have 7.1 also, and I set up my USB printer (HP 812) during one of the
installs I did. With the printer hooked up and on during install, The
install routine asks which dev it's attached to. Going from memory, the
default is /dev/lp0, but the drop down box should also show something like
/dev/usb/usblp. Choose the usb one, then try the print test page thingy.
You should also be able to change this through the DrakConfig option on the
desktop. It will ask you to add or modify a que. If you set up a que on
the parallel port, you can modify that one, there should be a similiar place
to specify a device. Hope this helps! BTW this is the first linux distro
I've tried that recognizes all my hardware (with the exception of my monitor
and video card, but that's not Mandrakes fault, it's XFree's).

I think you are correct, the problem does seem to be with the
ATI Rage Fury Pro which has the Rage 128 Pro chip. I see
that others with this card are having problems.

Ground. To go at UDMA-66 speeds, the system has to have clean signaling
on the cable. Which means that line impedance has to be well-controlled
(to reduce reflections and settling time) and the crosstalk has to be
held down (which means bleeding off the capacitive coupling between
lines in the cable.) Putting ground on every other wire is the easiest
way to do this (and SCSI did it from Day 1) but the original IDE saved
connector pins by skipping nonessentials like that.

Now they have to make up for the original crummy design with funny
connectors and fine-pitch cable. The ground that they get isn't very
good because the connector doesn't provide a low-impedance ground path,
but it's the best that can be done with backward compatibility.

65 is supposed to be the cached transfer rate, which means that it refer
to memory performance, which is what the Athlon system in question seemed to be
lacking. The sustained rate for large transfers is in the 16-18 range.
