Subject: es1370: unable to write to codec register (SB-PCI128 Problem)
Date: Sun, 06 Jun 1999 00:12:04 -0700

I've been working with RH 5.2 for about five months now, dual
booting Win98. My Intel mobo has a Crystal CSxxxx chip on it, and it's
been working with Linux, and Win98, but I use my PCI 128 for Win98 for
games that support 4 speakers, its nice to have, blah blah blah.... But,
its a pain to switch between the 128, and going into BIOS and Enabling
and Disabling the onboard sound whenever I switch between 98 and RH 5.2
(linux).
When I try to SNDCONFIG my PCI128 card, it probes it as the AudioPCI
card, thats correct. When it tries to play the sample sound I get a
repeating

es1370: unable to write to codec register
es1370: unable to write to codec register
es1370: unable to write to codec register
es1370: unable to write to codec register
es1370: unable to write to codec register
......

And before that, I get the LD4 error, so I have to go into ISAPNP and
(VERIFYLD N). When I boot Linux, I get the same error when it tries to
init. Sound. Any help please? Anything will help, trust me.

Thanks in advance -- Patrick --

http://www.alssound.com

or if you want to pay for drivers like I did :( http://www.opensound.com

you will get instructions about building a kernel without kernel sound
support(I think).

If you want the kernel drivers as modules. Read the sound how-to's. They
will take you a while but after you have read them, not only will you know
more but you will also know more about the way the Linux documentation is
very badly) written for newbies like me.

As Tim says it looks like you have a DNS problem, this means that the
information necessary to translate a computers name, such as
www.mentation.com, into an IP address, such as 206.67.59.248 is not
available for all names. The IP address is required in order to send a
message to the destination computer. In order to get the IP address a
program, say Netscape, contacts another program (on RedHat Linux this is
normally called named) in order to have it do the translation.

The reason for doing things this way is that you only need to tell one
program what the translation should be for a given name, rather than every
program that you run on the system. (DNS servers know how to query remote
DNS servers for the names they don't know.) In a linux window type the
command nslookup, which should give you a reply that looks something like
this.

[lewisf@sol lewisf]$ nslookup
Default Server: sol.mentation.home
Address: 10.0.0.1

The default server line gives the name of the machine that is running the
name server. Now type in the name of the mail server,
mail-db.acpub.duke.edu, that you want to use. This should respond with the
IP address required, like this.

> mail-db.acpub.duke.edu
Server: sol.mentation.home
Address: 10.0.0.1

Name: kuttner.acpub.duke.edu
Address: 152.3.233.59
Aliases: mail-db.acpub.duke.edu

If it does then it looks like your mail program configuration has either
lost the name of the mail server, or the IP address of the DNS server.
However if the DNS doe snot know the name then the next step is to check
under windows and what setting has been entered in your TCP/IP configuration
for the DNS server. The information can be found in Control
Panel->Networks->TCP/IP Properties. There should be one or more IP addresses
entered here. If they are different from the address returned by the
nslookup command then you will probably want to add the missing addresses to
your DNS configuration on Linux. At this point you should take a look at the
networking HOWTOs which will explain what you need to do. The DNS-HOWTO is a
good place to start.

hope this helps

I have a K6-2-350, overclocked to 400, running in an Asus P5AB motherboard,
and it works well. I believe that the latest experimental kernals support
the chipset properly (I'm just about to find out!), but even without that
support, it really flies. The onboard sound chip can be made to work too,
and sounds MUCH better than under Windoze!

Hi,
I am trying to set up IRQ tune on my 486 net gateway in an attempt to
improve the throughput and packet-loss rates it is incurring but I am unable
to get it set up.
I am running Debian 2.1 with kernel 2.2.6. All the packages are up to date
with those on the Debian mirrors.
When I run irqtune with the -e switch I get the following:
/sbin/irqtune -e

It would appear to me that insmod is out of date, but it seems to be the

Any suggestions?
Thanks

Redhat v6.0 config/setup program detected the DLink DE-528ct card as a
NE2000 card. From what I have read about the drivers, the
card/drivers are garbage.
What is the better driver that is supposed to be used. Which chipset
does this card have?

                        a) RealTek 8029 chip or
                        b) RealTek 8139 chip

Also what about the driver via-rhine.c? I have complied the source,
but it does not come up from the drop down list in the kernel Daemon
Configuration when you are setting up the card. How do you get a new
module to show up in the list?

Thanks...

Symbios Logic adapters work just fine for me. They also have the benfit
of being able to talk to each device using the maximum speed (if the
spec allows). So if you have a FastSCSI CDROM and a UltraSCSI HD then
the disk will be accessed w/ 20M/s and the CDROM w/ 10M/s. That's nice.

German c't mag had a test last month of most socket 7 board. They
checked various processors and your combination got a '-', i.e. not
supported or not stable. OK.
That's what you knew. But now you know that it's not your fault. Look at
the asus site to check if there are simple workarounds, else check out
if someone in

knows a hardware manipulation to make it run.

Using a small DOS tool downloaded from http://www.seagate.com I found the
correct parameters to be C/H/S=110/64/32. Specifying eda=110,64,32 with
lilo does the trick. I'm currently making the new file system. Bye, bye

Well, the box I was talking about doesn't run Linux at the
moment (it could, but my son is using it at the moment and I
would have to restore LILO on the MBR), but from my
recollection: I found out what IRQ, IO and DMA the sound was set
to (in the PC BIOS) and loaded the sb module with those as
parameters.

If I find some time I boot the machine into Linux and have a look.
It was running RedHat 5.2 with a 2.2.5-ac6 kernel, btw.

Well that's another fear, it was sold to me as a 400, but maybe it's fake.
Is it possible that the problem comes from different Caches (sizes) in a

That's what I'd suggest. You'll have to tell the BIOS to be excluding the
IRQ your secondary par. port card uses, though.

Either your BIOS is broken, or the video card doesn't work with the
IRQ the card gets by the BIOS.

I'd strongly suggest searching for a newer BIOS version, then.

At least, it works. If Linux doesn't like the printer port, did you tell
it about your secondary parallel port and its settings ?
