Erm, I said not to install the limiting jumper (that's what I meant by
`remove the limiting jumper' - assuming you currently had it on). The
limiting jumper seems to prevent Linux accessing anything beyond the
32G boundary too.

The solution works on my motherboard - it's a TMC TI5VGF (6 PCI slots,
2Mb cache with a K6-III/450). Luckily the most recent BIOS update has
also solved the BIOS detection problem so I'm using the first 32G for
2 FAT32 partitions. I've a 5Gb ext2 after that (with about 4Gb
installed - copied over from my previous drive) and that's OK too, but
the BIOS upgrade won't affect Linux's geometry detection on my kernel.

That's not sweeping - the BIOS on my TMC was also AWARD, didn't
support the drive (hung if I tried autodetect), but would boot no
problem so long as I set the device on the relevent channel to `NONE'
(i.e. nothing installed there, Mr. BIOS).
Note though that when doing this, my drive was connected to my
secondary IDE channel (master) - with no devices defined on the
secondary channel it is possible that the BIOS doesn't bother probing
for any and could explain the differences in our experiences.

My new BIOS version does understand the drive, so of course I no
longer need to remove the settings from the BIOS.

Not on my system! Once the partition table is there, Linux can boot
off any of the partitions I've created - I don't need any kernel
parameters at all though I see no harm in sending them if you want.

You'll lose a little bit of space with that config (255*63*4892*512 =
40,238,069,760 bytes versus 63*16*39703*512 = 40,981,118,976 bytes),
but as you say, several similar combinations should work.

: 65535 cylinders if the value in the partition table is only 16 bits wide.

recompiling network services just because they're using different
kernels.) Most my home boxes just miss out on 2.2.13 (one still on

{chortle} Are you kidding! ;) I had 26Gb of disk space before I
upgraded (9Gb 7200RPM Seagate and 17Gb 5400RPM Maxtor) - and most of
that had got chock full of games (virtually all original despite most
being minimal installs!) I'd only added that 17Gb drive 8 months ago
too ...

Hi.

My modem is on /dev/ttyS2 IRQ 15, but when I boot my machine (running
Mandrake 7) the IRQ reverts to 4. Of course, I can change it in a
konsole window with setserial, but that get old real fast. Is there a
way to change it permanently?

Thanks.

Those jumperless ISA NE2000 clones usually have a DOS program to set the
address/IRQ in an EPROM. Bite the bullet and boot from a DOS floppy, run
the setup program, and never worry about it again :) Windows need not

The OSS driver that I am referring to is the current commercial one from
www.opensound.com. When I try to use the RedHat sndconfig it identifies the same
chip (1371) always locks up during the sound sample play. I have tried using the
--noautoconfig but the end results are the same. I can get out of it by using
ctrl-d but I have never been able to hear any sounds.

To add $0.02, I have a cheap CD-RW on /dev/hdc and my main HD (13 G,
7200RPM) on /dev/hdb. Burned a 50-minute audio CD the other day at 4x and
Netscape was running the whole time, surfing various sites including some
with @#$ing Java. No audible defects in the CD. top showed that cdrecord
was taking up about 2% of the CPU. Granted, the system is reasonably fast
and large (K6-2 400, 96M) but it shows that IDE can actually burn CDs and
do other stuff at the same time. YMMV! Haven't tried this with a data
CD, but we'll just see now....

Hi,

Of my experience with OfficeJet 600:

Printing Only:

 1) Try text print - should work.

 2) Color printing in 300x300 dpi, using gs, with the following filter
    should work:

/usr/bin/gs -q -dSAFER -dNOPAUSE -r300 -sDEVICE=cdj550 -sOutputFile=- -

And there's a site out there of a group who is working on it, so a day

Subject: Impasse with 2 SCSI controllers, kernel mods required?
Date: Tue, 7 Mar 2000 22:28:14 EST

Hi,

I have a SCSI-only system. This means that I'm booting from a 2940UW,
drive 0. This has always worked perfectly with many versions of Caldera
Open Linux, now 2.3. I have installed a second SCSI controller, a
1542CF to connect a scanner. I have posted details of the setup in a
previous post to comp.os.linux.hardware with the subject line

 Can't load aha1542 driver (new 1542CF as 2d SCSI)

Since then, I have tried many things that lead me to believe that it is
really not possible to have the 1542CF recognized and at the same time
boot from the 2940UW.

I have compiled a new kernel (2.2.14) with both drivers built-in. On
boot the kernel keeps looping and timing out looking for drive 0 on the
wrong controller! (the 1542CF). It insists on doing this whether the
1542CF bios is enabled or disabled. However, the controller is
recognized. Is there a way to force the boot process to go to the 2940?

Kernel recompile, this time with no 1542CF driver built-in. It is now
impossible to load the driver (Device or resource busy). I have read
(on comp.os.linux.hardware) that this is because the higher level drivers
are loaded first and they shouldn't be. Obviously, they have to be if
the system is going to boot from the 2940UW's boot drive. How is this
catch 22 possible?

I also tried to load the 1542CF driver at boot time with Caldera's
original kernel (2.2.10) and the boot process locked up. I told COAS
to load the driver at boot. Obviously, by the time the 1542 driver
is loaded, the higher-level SCSI components are already loaded (if this
is in fact the problem).

As can be seen if you refer to the above-mentioned post, the hardware
works fine and is recognized by SCSISelect, there are no IRQ or other
resource conflict.

Can anybody shed some light on this problem?

Thanks

I've been told I'm about to get a firmware update for the drive, and will

I should mention that the drive seems to work well in Windows 95 (albeit
it writes at 2x).

From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] (Jeff East)
Subject: Iomega ZipCD firmware update coming
Date: Tue, 7 Mar 2000 22:45:04 -0500

On the Iomega forums web site (http://forums.iomega.com), a tech
rep said that a firMware update is now available, and that one should go
to their tech-rep email page and request it.

Not known yet, but it is suspected to fix a problem many have
where the drive only does 2x writes (advertised as 4x drive) on some
media. I've also heard that this drive is also sold as the Phillips 4201
and Traxdata 4201.

I'm hoping that it will remedy regular read errors I experience
under kernel 2.2.13/14.
