For those in the UK that are interested, both Dabs Direct (www.dabs.com)
and Insight (www.insight.com/uk) are selling PC100 SDRAM in 128Mb chunks
for around 65-70 pounds including VAT.

I tried that a while ago ( the symlinking) and in the first place it worked,
but you can't add any new bookmarks under LinuX even if the mount options
for the Windoze partition are set to writable. Another problem was that
after adding some new bookmarks under Windoze they didn't show up in the
symlinked LinuX bookmarks.
So I turned back again to copying the bookmarks from one partition (system)
to the other.

It was fixed by putting in a PCI graphics card.

I second that, and it is also clearly stated if XF86Config's documentation IIRC.
Take it from an experienced TV repair man.
You blow them, I fix them, but usually advice you to buy a new one :)
Why? because this kind of repair, replacing HV transformer, few transistors,
caps, is labour intensive, parts are expensive, and you would still have the
same monitor, and then you would try again would not you ;).
If indeed RedHat does not warn you about this at install, you should try to sue
them for the repair costs.

Bonjour,

We had 2 troubles with our new QMS DeskLaser 1600P/XNet.

The first one was a duplexer (recto-verso unit) model uncompatible with
the printer. Well now it's ok (we received the right model duplexer).

BUT the 2nd one is still bothering. We notice a too much long delay (15mn) when
printing a Postscript file before to see a page out of the printer.
Is that due to the IP interface configuration ? If yes what must we change.
10 days after having ask the question to QMS support we don't have any answer?

Text service works finely.

Thanks for your help.

Can't run FDISK anymore. Run it and it just freezes with a blinking cursor,
with hard drive light on after I installed Red Hat. I can run Disk Druid
and see app partitions. Tried re-SYSing C: (to get rid of LILO), still
doesn't work.

Is this a common thing - unable to read partition tables? I need to add
another DOS partition, but can't now. What's up?

Thanks

Hello,

We have a compaq proliant 3000 here running Linux,
with a Smart2DH SCSI board, 5disks, using RAID 5.
we applied the 3 following patches.
patched the kernel: DAC960 and smart2
patched lilo.

The server is really fast and seems stable, but sometimes,
all access to a local directory (never the same) will fail.
all attemps to read, write, create files there will fail.
The process (ls, mkdir etc...) freezes, and you can't
kill it.
"sync" will also fail.

we run kernel 2.2.9, and had similar problems with the 2.2.7

here's a trace from a ls hanging :

[..]
time(NULL) = 930129113
ioctl(1, TCGETS, {B38400 opost isig icanon echo ...}) = 0
ioctl(1, TIOCGWINSZ, {ws_row=24, ws_col=80, ws_xpixel=499,
ws_ypixel=316}) = 0
brk(0x8058000) = 0x8058000
lstat("/home/ntsys/finition", {st_mode=0, st_size=0, ...}) = 0
open("/dev/null", O_RDONLY|O_NONBLOCK|0x10000) = -1 ENOTDIR (Not a
directory)
open("/home/ntsys/finition", O_RDONLY|O_NONBLOCK|0x10000) = 3
fstat(3, {st_mode=0, st_size=0, ...}) = 0
fcntl(3, F_SETFD, FD_CLOEXEC) = 0
brk(0x805a000) = 0x805a000
lseek(3, 0, SEEK_CUR) = 0
getdents(3,

and it blocks there, trying to get the directory entries. And no,
the filesystem isn't corrupted.

If anyone has an idea, pointers to some docs, please letme know.

THanx a lot

I tried everything, every possible combination. Well, I've reset everything
to the initial value and I've installed the ALSA drivers: now it works
flawlessly...

Ciao,
Illo.

A good point.

gcc typically uses a rather small subset of the i386, mostly using
lots of leal's, and using specific forms of those, taking advantage
of particular addressing modes, and eschewing others. But occasionally
one sees use of rather 'exotic' instructions like setne and so forth;
a good compiler will spot the opportunity to use such an instruction
if it's justifiable.

A few times I've taken the (rather large) assembly output from gcc,
and passed it through a few grep's, getting it into a form that can
be processed via awk, just to see the frequency counts of the
various instructions emitted by gcc. Setting up the scripts/pipelines
to do this wasn't that difficult, and the results were rather interesting.

No, and some CISC's do have these features. There are even some
'hybridized' processors that are internally risc-ish, have many
registers, but on the 'outside' look like an x86 (ISTR the Cyrix
being like this). Also many CISCs have superpipelining etc., but
it all boils down to how much die space you've got to work with, and
large complicated instruction sets require some die space that *might*
be better used for things like more registers.

This is still the case, but was much more true and a factor for the
processors like the 8088/80286, and less so for more modern (386+)
processors. Intel of course hasn't managed to improve on the
number of registers, but even though (historically) the registers
have 'preferred' purposes, there really isn't any more the restriction
that only certain registers can be used in certain instructions, except
possibly those instructions that use certain registers by default (such
as the string byte instructions).

And it's easier to optimize.
