I love answering my own questions. :-)
Anyway, I switched from sane-1.0.1 to sane 1.0.3 and applied an Epson backend
patch I found. That seems to have fixed things.

This could be caused by NFS, if you are using NFS. (It seems
very likely.) NFS has a reputation of being a notoriously
slow file sharing service. I have noticed that the speed of
NFS transfers are greatly effected by the program being used
to make file copies. I have seen that the common utilities
such as "cp" and "rsync" are very slow at making NFS
transfers.
I have been able to do very fast and massive file transfers
using the "mirrordir" program.
It could be caused by the combination of NFS and whatever
other program you are using. You may have to experiment
to see which program gives the best performance.

I'll give PDQ a shot first and if it gets too slow I'll switch back to

I have a Microsoft wheel mouse. The wheel worked OK until today. Don't
know what changed. I have Mandrake 7.1. Hraddrake identifies the
mouse OK. But the wheel doesn't function. When I go to a terminal as a
superuser and I type imwheel -k, then starts working OK. I put the
statement imwheel -k in the /etc/rc.d/rc.local file, but still does not
start by itself.
Any suggestions?

If Mandrake 7.0 has installed his CD writer the same way it installed
mine, he won't have to do anything other than change the fstab setting
for his CD to read scd0. All the emulation stuff is already there.
I installed Mandrake 7.0 using a Sony CDRWriter and because no ATAPI
driver was available for the drive, it was automatically installed with
a scsi emulation driver. The only problem I had, like the original
poster, was that the fstab file had been set up incorrectly.

I can't get SuSE 7.0 Professional to install on my system, it seems that
everytime the X server tries to setup/config/start, everything goes
wrong. I just changed my motherboard + cpu + ram but kept my ELSA
Gladiac (GeForce2 GTS 32MB), Yast2 starts and my USB mouse is also
recognized from Yast2. But after package copying, when Linux restarts
and Yast2 wants to restart, the graphics get corrupted and everything
freezes. Does anyone have installed SuSE 7.0 successfully with a
GeForce2 GTS?

Exabyte has a "how to get our tape drives working under linux" page on
their web site.
It gives the density commands for up to 8500c, but I don't remember
seeing Mammoth.
I had to set the correct density and block size with mt before my 8505
worked.
The other thing to consider is that the drive is bad. I had problems and
even had it
repaired and it still gave errors. I got the exabyte test software
(which is a DOS
program) and after testing for hours, found that the drive damaged
tapes. I sent it back
with reports from the software (which everyone doing repair seems to
use) and they believed
me and fixed it. The test software is downloadable, but you have to give
them info before they
allow you to have it. Sorry I don't remember the name, but when you find
it, it's obvious.
Good Luck and I hope this helps.

I'm yet another person who ran into this issue, with a
950MHz T-Bird. As soon as I can, I'll try your solution,
Tristan. Presumably this can be added to lilo.conf so
that we don't have to enter the magic phrase on every
boot.
For anyone else following this--RH 6.1 does not have this
problem, and installs and runs fine. Hopefully our friends
at RH will fix this in the upcoming 7.0.
Also, the most appealing solution, to boot with the
parm "quit_acting_like_an_idiot_and_boot=1" doesn't work.

We have also a plexwriter 4/2/20, actually both tested with various
controlles
(symbios 810, tekram and initio conrollers).
They work perfectly with linux and W98.
Do you have SCSI _TERMINATORS_ ? Is the cable good? Not inverted?
The cd-writer can support you termination, see jumpers.
(Officially SCSI should have termination on both cable ends,
but a short cable -less than .5 meters- should work with single termination
too.
God luck... It should work, really.

Well, the zip device is a direct access device, like a hard disk drive.
you will need the module sd_mod, or SCSI harddisk support in kernel.
Try this: mount /dev/sda /mnt/zip.
Put in /etc/fstab: /dev/sda /mnt/zip vfat noauto,user,rw 0 0
Actually I do not have a zip, but a MOD. I think the problem is that you would
like to use the cd (scd0)
instead of sda (the block device)

fuser -mv /mnt/zip will show you which pids are using the mount point.
So you can kill them.
After that do a sync if you want, so the system will write out all puffered data.
Somehow it's possible to disable caching on specified devices.
Then umount, and then
echo "remove-scsi-singledevice 0 0 0 0" > /proc/scsi
then you can discoonect the device safely.
