I think you need to get the latest kernel. I am using linux kernal 2.2.14,
Redhat 6.2.
I have a 40G Maxtor disk (different model) and I have EZ-BIOS and jumpered
as 2G
harddrive. I can format the entire 40G harddisk for Windows, but when I
used partition magic to put 20G for windows and 20G
for linux, partition magic created and formatted the 20G linux. When I
tried to format the 20G linux again with Redhat 6.2,
it would make a horrible clicking sound formatting the last 10G and it would
not finish formatting the 20G.
I had to move the linux to the front 7G and back 33G to windows and it works
fine even though I don't like the size of the partition.
I am downloading Redhat 7.0. Hopefully I could format the linux partition
the way I want it.

you'd be better off using 'modprobe' than 'insmod' to load this particular
module.

just wondering... did you compile alsa from the latest sources? (0.5.9c
driver, etc...)

INSTALL file is very helpful... provided you take the time to read it *well*

alsa takes slightly more effort to set up than some of the other
alternatives for sound... but it seems to work well when you get it right.

---

For example... I'm running Slackware 7.1 and I found that I needed the
following to get things loaded correctly.

(in /etc/rc.d/rc.modules)

If you're running another Linux distribution - less BSDish - it should still
be useful for the point.

# load sound stuff
/sbin/modprobe snd-card-cmipci
/sbin/modprobe snd-mixer-oss
/sbin/modprobe snd-pcm-oss
/sbin/modprobe snd-seq-oss

I started out with just the line for snd-card-cmipci... and it didn't load
everything I needed... so I added things incrementally until everything was
fixed.

btw... I just installed Slackware 7.1 on a machine at work... with i810
sound - will probably get around to setting up the sound tomorrow.

good luck...

Further information and partial fix: after recompiling pcmcia-cs with APM
disabled, my system now goes for much longer before losing link.

It almost seems to be triggered by a number of packets, because it can run
overnight without losing link, but when I am working during the day, I lose
link after roughly 8 hours.

Any ideas people?

I don`t know RH 7.0, sorry. There is no distribution which
supports the promise "out of the box" *AFAIK*. (Well, my SuSE

I don't use NTFS, mainly because I couldn't read it when booted
into Win9x. What's ext2?

I basically use FAT16 as the lowest common denominator that all OS's
can use. But I'm starting to get concerned about that 2.1GB limitation.

You know that I *don't* mean choosing "Restart the computer in MSDOS mode"
from the shutdown menu, right? I mean choosing "Command Prompt Only"
from the boot menu at startup, the boot menu that you can get by
pressing some F key (can't remember which one; I use TweakUI to
get the boot menu every time).

The Second Extended filesystem. That's what most Linux distributions

I realize that the V5 and Linux were not exactly made for each other.
However, I am experiencing an unusual problem (I think). Linux Redhat 6.1
installation tells me "Cannot dectect Video card". It does not give an
option to probe; I cannot test any configurations. I click the "Test
Configuration" button and absolutely nothing happens. After installation, I
get the console but running "startx" gives me "no server available". I
tried reinstalling the XFree rpms from the installation CD-ROM. Linux tells
me all packages are already installed.

Any ideas?

Thanks
