Personnally, I've have lots of success with both 3Com & DLink cards
(currently running 2 dlink cards in my firewall/server, and a 3Com card in
each workstation).

For just a single computer connection, just run linuxconf, setup your NIC
for DHCP, and away you go. If you want to do some NAT/Firewalling/etc... it
gets a little bit more in depth, but not bad.

I'd recommend upgrading the kernel to 2.4.2, which seems to work better
with these chipsets.

For winmodems with a Lucent chipset, the driver at

works great for me.

Please can you help me?

I've downloaded the SuSE EVal 7_1 ISO file. Now what do I do with it? I've
burned a CD and it won't boot with it.

I've never installed Linux before and I am at a loss as to how I make the CD
bootable from a PC that only has Windows 98. I have tried to out YAST2 on a
floppy - it wouldn't boot the CD, it kept asking for CD#1.

I also made another boot floppy from "bootdisk" file. It still didn't work
out - it was trying to find CD#1 as well.

WHat can I do to get the install to work?

Thanks.

I run 1600x12000 @70Hz.
Monitor is LG Flatron 795FT Plus
Horizontal Freq. 30-96
Vertical Freq: 50-160

Graphic board: ASUS V7100 GeForce2 MX - 32

XFree86 4.0.2
NVIDIA_Kerel-0.96
NVIDIA_GLX-0.96

In my experienc, the resolution is depend on Monitor's Frequency range and the
graphich board.
Before I use this graphic card, 1024x768 isn't good by the old graphic board.

I'm planning on adding an IBM Deskstar 30GB drive to a Promise ATA100
PCI controller card. I'm keeping a CD writer on the internal IDE port
and disabling the other IDE port (to gain an IRQ).

Anyone have this type of setup, and if so, are you having any problems?
I'm currently running Mandrake 7.2 with kernel 2.4.2. I've heard that
the 2.4 kernels have support built in, how well does it work. Also, is
anyone actually getting 37MB/sec from this drive and controller, as I've
heard is possible in Windows?

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Steve Anthony

Same here.. I normally run 1280x1024 and it looks good.y
I tried 1600x1200 and it works on my 20" fancy HP monitor, but it's pushing
the resolution of the monitor, and the small text gets a little too small.
The Matrox card works V well, installs easily and you can run it
at higher AGP speed multiples for further acceleration. The videoDAC
output looks very clean.. nice crisp edges without 'ringing' or ghosting
etc..

I use my Eizo F67 19" which has both bnc and vga connectors. That way I can
use both my Amiga and a PC at the same time. Saves me the space (and money)
of having to monitors. I easily switch between the two using a button on
the monitors frontpanel.

IIRC, the x86 Linux kernel explicitly disables the processor ID

hi bruce,

just a quick hack for the eth0 device in C. for more information take a look
at the ioctl call and the appropriate structures.

hth,

When you installed Linux the first time did you create a boot
(recovery) diskette? If so, you can just boot that and run 'lilo'
to restore the MBR to run LILO.

If not, try booting your RedHat 7.0 CD-ROM (which should be bootable)
and I think they may have a recovery mode there (where you can boot
an existing linux partition). Then run 'lilo'.

I would try one of the following.

1) Download the source to ifconfig
2) strace ifconfig

That is kinda the point of an open source operating system.
Any functionality you wish to duplicate, you can. And you
generally don't even need to write your own code.

I think this is merely a nicety rather than a requirement. But you could
change it to read GLoria Synergy if you like.

There are other tools - I personally do the initial configuration with
xf86cfg and then tidy up any errors by hand.

Try this - this manually sets the memory clock and might be the right
thing to tweak. There isn't any other obvious Clock tweak... but be
warned - this may hang your machine, so make sure that you can boot to
runlevel 3 if you have to reboot. The other two options below are
safer. (Just in case you don't know, to boot to runlevel 3 you would
type 'linux 3' at the LILO prompt - this is the text-only startup).

Section "Device"
  Identifier "Device[0]"
  VendorName "Elsa"
  Driver "glint"
  BoardName "Winner2000Office"
  BusID "1:0:0"
  Option "SetMClk" "150"
EndSection

One other possibility is to force the chipset detection rather than
letting it probe for it. This would look like

Section "Device"
  Identifier "Device[0]"
  VendorName "Elsa"
  Driver "glint"
  BoardName "Winner2000Office"
  ChipSet "pm2"
  BusID "1:0:0"

or possibly the 'pm2v' chipset instead of the 'pm2' if this doesn't do
it.

The order of the Section "Device" doesn't matter, but it's easier to
read in this order :-)

Cheers,

I will be buying a laser printer for Linux. I want native postscript and if
possible paper handling for 11x17 paper. Any recommendations?

Cost per page printed is a factor.

Thanks,

Subject: toshiba / alsa sound problems
Date: Wed, 07 Mar 2001 14:46:05 +0500

I have a toshiba laptop. It uses the yamaha YMF754 sound chip.

I have it set up with the latest sound drivers from alsa-project
(production, not beta).

I've been through the HOWTOs and set up modules.conf correctly.

I am running RH 7, Alsa 0.5.10b,, 2.2.18 kernel (stock, not RH).

It plays CDs fine. But when I try to use the PCM channel (?? - the
channel that all the .wav sounds are played on) I get a loud buzzing sound,
with a very weak sound being played over it.

I've been through the alsa maillist; the problem is discussed, but
there's no solution.

I've tried to use the "new" deja, but their search engine is so broken
it's totally useless.

So - anyone have any ideas?

1. You can replace your winmodem with the real thing for as little as $24.95 US.
It might be worthwhile!
2. If you use loadlin from your Win partition you don't need lilo. Search on
loadlin.exe
 3. I use Slackware. Everything I need can be downloaded from the
www.slackware.com site. (For years I ran strictly from downloaded distros.)
I imagine the RedHat site is similar. In particular you could probably rummage
around and find a way to download a boot disk.

I have the same machine running with a Dacom Gold Card pcmcia
modem. Works fine. I did _not_ equip the machine with the internal
winmodem. I seem to recall some discussion that having both modems
in the machine was a problem for some when setting up Linux, but
that's only a vague recollection. If you look in Google you will
find quite a few sites that give specifics on setting up Linux on
this particular machine.

Subject: Problem with SMC 1211TX Ethernet card
Date: Wed, 07 Mar 2001 20:31:24 GMT

I have RedHat 7.0 installed (with the 2.4 kernel test version), although
I don't think that the fact that it is a beta has anything to do with my
problem. I am trying to load the 8139too.o module, but it won't
recognize the presence of the card.

I checked in /proc/pci and found this:
  Bus 0, device 9, function 0:
Ethernet controller: PCI device 0001:1211 (rev 16).
      IRQ 9.
      Master Capable. Latency=32. Min Gnt=32.Max Lat=64.
      I/O at 0xa400 [0xa4ff].
      Non-prefetchable 32 bit memory at 0xdf800000 [0xdf8000ff].

I would guess that since it is not detected as an SMC 1211TX, the driver
doesn't recognize it as valid hardware.

Is there anything I can do to fix this?

Thanks

I have this setup, except I haven't disabled the unused on-board IDE port.

ASUS P3B-F (440BX chipset)
Promise Ultra100 PCI card.
IBM DTLA-307030 on Promise (/dev/hde)
CD-Writer and ATAPI tape on on-board controller (/dev/hdc & /dev/hdd)

A few problems:
- You need a kernel with PDC202XX support. Failing that, you need to
pass magic "ide=" options to the kernel at boot, which is no fun.
- Add "lba32" at the top of /etc/lilo.conf.
- Note that lilo WON'T boot off /dev/hde if there are any disks on the
onboard controller. lilo limitation which had me stumped for a while.
- The BIOS sees the Promise controller as a SCSI controller, so I had to
change the BIOS boot order to include SCSI.

I'm running 2.4 and 2.2.19pre + ide patches, no problems at all.
hdparm -Tt /dev/hde gives 36MB/s.

Hi, I have a Linux and a Windows PC. I need to connect them together and to
the cable modem. I also want the outside world be able see my Linux machine
(I want to setup Linux as webserver, ftp and telnet, etc.) I'm thinking
buying a hub for this task.

So what is the proper connection? is it

cable modem --- Linux --- Hub --- Windows

or

cable modem --- Hub --- Linux
                           |
                            ------ Windows

Or should I use something other than hub?

Thanks.

How about the built in touch pad "mouse" device? Any recommendations?
