That's what I expected too but, a little surprisingly, the Dell that I looked at was pretty much "bare metal". So far I didn't find how much it costs from the other vendors.
We found out that if you happen to need the capacity, but not the redundnacy, your best choice is to custom build it, or get a VAR to custom build it for you. We ordered one based on: INTEL SERVER SC5400RA 16 DIMM DUAL XEON DP 1.6 1066 and it cost, with the 16Gb of RAM 4.8k$ not including VAT.
After buying desktop Dell for home last week I suspect so much too.
The local VAR is 5 Exists, alhough being Oz side right now I reckon this won't help you much
Uhhh, 5 Exists, in Ramat Hachayal? I remember finding something with them that I couldn't find anywhere else (probably some specific hardware recommended by MAV).
- but maybe others. Since they are already late on the promised delivery I will hold recomending buying from them just yet, though :-) Anyway, we had a really funny time getting through to them that yes, we really need a machine with so much RAM and CPU power but with a measly 250 HD SATA disk, no RAID etc. They were sure we don't understand what we asked for... :-)
May I ask what sort of need you have it for? In our case our developers want a very highly accessible very large database to just be stored in memory (e.g. for a lookup while a customer of our clients clicks on an HTML page link).
