does this mean you got to bash prompt - i.e the system took the required
parameters and did the file system mount etc...

or
are you still at LILO prompt.

If the former is true use "passwd" command to change the passwd. root's old
passwd is not asked for.

If the latter is true your LILO is protected using restricted and hence you
need to boot off a floppy and then give "linux single" to reach the bash
prompt - and then proceed as advised above.
