Appreciate how? I do marvel at his assumption that cracking
into someone elses machine would be condoned. And this was indeed
 breaking and entry

On the other hand, he may just feel we are like him -- a
collection of people with shifting morals. I do find that mildly
 offensive.

A thief may well feel free to brag i a thieves guild -- and
that does not abrogate his guilt.

How can you be so sure? And just his presence was bad enough
-- did it (along with other intrusions like that) result in loss of a
shell account for lots of other people?)

Cracking into other peoples computers is misuse.

Good system adminstrators do not have to resort to something
as idiotic as breaking into other peoples homes (is that how they
train policemen where you come from?). You do it on your own
machines, you join BUGTRAQ, you read books on security, and you look
at security related information on the net. You do not break into
 machines without prior permission.

There is never a propoer forum t discuss cracking.

That is just as vaid as hacving police recruits breaking into
peoples homes (``just as long as they do not take anything'')

I do think you are wrong. People should be held accountable
 for their actions.

The misnaming of fields of study is so common as to lead to what
might be general systems laws. For example, Frank Harary once
suggested the law that any field that had the word "science" in its
name was guaranteed thereby not to be a science. He would cite as
examples Military Science, Library Science, Political Science,
Homemaking Science, Social Science, and Computer Science. Discuss
the generality of this law, and possible reasons for its predictive
power. Gerald Weinberg, "An Introduction to General Systems Thinking"
