Use wvdial - run /usr/bin/wvdialconf initially to autodetect your modem
etc. Then configure your dialer parameters. In fact, if you use the red
hat ppp dialer (which comes with gnome) - it is a frontend to wvdial and
will set up wvdial.conf for you.
Then give the command wvdial diffs (say) as root ..... easy. Don't bother
with chatscripts. You can set other options in /etc/ppp/options
