Do you have something running (say linuxconf)?

<scratch scratch> I'm going bald trying to figure it out - you had this
problem earlier as well, right?

Did you shutdown sendmail first, before editing sendmail.cf?

Or have you updated to the latest version of linuxconf (which came a
couple of months ago in PCQ) - the braindead thing keeps trying to change
my mailbox permissions to 0775 from 1777. Pine 4.21 then flashes a
warning that /var/spool/mail _must_ have 1777.

I suppose it does equally brain-dead things elsewhere.

In Hyderabad - sitting in my office reading your mail :)
