RTFM, ALSA mutes sound by default.
RHL 6.2 can store and restore mixer settings on startup/shutdown. But ALSA comes with
its own utility "alsactl" which does(?) the same.

ALSA is probing for more cards. Add this in /etc/conf.modules
alias char-major-116 snd
options snd snd_major=116 snd_cards_limit=1
options snd-card-interwave snd_index=0 snd_id="GusPnP"
