hi,
I donot think there is any need to reinstall the linux if the
frequencies have been given wrong. After all the frequencies are needed
for X and linux is not just X. you can boot into text mode also (init 3)
When the lilo promts you type:
Lilo: linux 3
This will take you into non graphical multiuser mode. Login and
run Xconfigurator or XF86Setup. Try giving the frequencies again and if
the screen locks do a reset. and again use linux 3 on lilo.
It would be better to unmount your home partitions etc if u have
got a big disk otherwise it will waste a lot of time doing fsck on boot.
But if your card is trident I feel that the culprit is not the
frequencies but the card itself. I also had a lot of trouble with trident
but none such with S3. But I am not saying that trident is bad. maybe
something I coulde not figure out. (Around 40 computers in our Lab are
using Trident 3DImage975). Maybe the current lot may be faulty.
