To check the numbering alone he wouldn't need to format it. Simply delete 
hda2 &3 and create a new hda2 which occupies the entire space.

Of course you'd lose all data in the partitions, if there were any.. And
I'd bet in this case he didn't mean he merged the data in the partition 
when he said "merging 2&3 into 2"..
