It does not matter whether u have linux in extended partition. All the
files required to boot i.e. all files in /boot partition should be in the
first 1024 cylinders of ur hdd. In case of ur 6.4GB HDD this condition was
satisfied even if ur linux was in the extended partition. But in case of a
larger hdd, u have to make a separate /boot partition for keeping these
files. This partition is mostly created as a primary partition of about 20
MB. This was the case of the old LILO
If u have compiled and installed the new LILO this problem shud not be
there(I hope so). In any case I would prefer to make a small /boot
partition in the starting of my HDD.
