You seem to be booting directly into a graphical login with an improperly configured X
server.

Solution (one of them):

Press Alt+Ctrl+F1, login as root at that prompt and type init 3.
Then run Xconfigurator to configure X. init 5 or a graphical login, startx to start
the GUI from the command prompt. Do a startx first to test you configuration first
though.
Edit /etc/fstab and change the default runlevel to 3, if you want to continue in text
mode.
