Hi!
I did not understand this. Do you mean if we have an account with
hd1.vsnl.net.in, we should not use (for instance) bom6.vsnl.net.in? Or do
you mean if we have a dial up account with dot/vsnl, we should not use a
private ISP. On Dec 6, hd1.vsnl.net.in was not accepting any mail for
relay and our mail queue became alarmingly long. On a hunch I changed the
smart relay to bom6.vsnl.net.in and also tried giasmd01.vsnl.net.in and
both servers happily relayed my message - and we got over a tricky
situation.
What is the complication in using an smtp relay other than the ISP that we
dial up to?

Yes Gaurav,
You cannot and should not use a smtp relay of other ISP than you are dialup
to. The SMTP relays of the ISPs also shold not allows this. Previously vsnl
smtp relays were accepting mails from outside hosts but they have stopped
that.
If you really want to do that for some reason, then try to find out some
other relay hosts which allow this facility. May be a search on this topic
will help !!!!
