Personal Opinion: In these days of ultra cheap disk storage, compressed
mailboxes do not achieve anything spectacular. The only use that I can
think of, for compressed mailboxes, is in archiving emails. Don't be
disheartened that your mailer does not support it.

I can give you a host of reasons to switch to mutt, but this won't
be one of them.
