Yes, that's possible, but the framerates that Mesa gives you are
nowhere close to playable. (it'll be seconds per frame instead of
frames per second :-))

Nvidia cards have a binary-only vendor-provided driver for XFree86
4.0. According to reports, this driver is the most complete
implementation of OpenGL under Linux. The cheapest one, the Riva TNT2,
should give you decent frame rates for Q3 (I forgot the benchmark
values)
