the modules directory layout in kernel 2.4.0 has changed. unlike in
previous versions where sound drivers used to be "misc" and net driver
used to be in "net" they are now in "kernel/xxx". When you try to do
an insmod or modprobe, these tools try to locate the module in the
layout that they expect.
For module loading to work properly you need the latest mod_utils
package(which comes separately (but at kernel.org itself). I use
mod_utils v2.4.0 . Look in the kernel documentation (INSTALL or
something similar) for more information on this.
