Copy is normally called yank.
To yank a word, do 'yw' (w/o quotes..)
To yank a character yc
To yank till the end of line from current position y$
To yank till the beg. of line from cur. pos y0
To yank entire current line yy

To cut use d
dw - delete word
d$ - delete till eol
dd - delete curline.

to paste simply p (called put)

There are numerous combinations using which you can do all kind of cut,
copy & put.

vim (Vi IMproved) is much friendlier than vi & offers all (& much
more) functionality of vi.
