Sorry, I couldn't conclude anything, and perhaps your logic is not stupid.
I run xmms too and with a playlist of < 100 from mp3 CD, the machine does
stop for a fraction of a sec (netscape jerks up, vim takes slightly more
time to save, protein molecules rotate slower etc) everytime the song
buffer runs out. I guess the read-ahead buffering for xmms is not properly
implemented or something like that. And with a playlist > 1000 you know
why your machine is freezing ;-)
