| ||Now internal modem derives power from PC power supply only. Given the
| ||reputaion of indian government service, how safe internal modems are,
from
| ||passing the surge to the Mobo?
| |
| |All modems have varistor which protects the circuit from the surges, in
| |addition to isolation transformer which isolates the telephone line and
| |internal circuit.
|
|Last week , my external modem blew up due to some surge from the phone
|line !! My phone gave a ring and went out of order!! and it rectified it
|self in about an hour ! but then I discovered that my modem is dead... the
|AT commands and modem lights work ... but it can't dial out!
|
|(had a similiar experience once when a modem was connected thru an epabx
|and a shortcircuit blew up the whole ebapx system... the modem blew up
|with a flash of light !! )
|
If your modem is still responding to AT commands you may be in luck.
Probably ring detector opto coupler or varsity is damaged.
Put you telephone line plug in to "phone" jack instead of "Line" jack of
the modem.
The modem may work for dial out.
Both these jacks are almost same with some minor difference.
