2 possibilities
1) some error in the screen part of the xf86config
2) all the modelines are getting deleted
try
X :1 &>/tmp/logx
and have a look at the log file

about sluggishness, i had allready posted, disable apm and acpi from the
bios and init scripts. There also might be an irq clash, check especially
the irq set for vga.
