Yes, I too did the X 4 install through Xinstall.sh. I had previously
downloaded all the .tgz files. Xinstall.sh went smoothly, and replaced
my existing X 3.3.6. But X didn't start, with the gartioc error.
Then I tried compiling kernel 2.4.0, booted it, and then after
running xf86config, X came up wonderfully. And, after this, I again
rebooted with default kernel 2.2.18pre21, and presto! X worked with
that too, and is working till date. ( I need the 2.2.x kernel because of
a modem driver that's available only for 2.2. kernels. :-( )
The drawback in this is apt-get will get confused with the version
of X installed. The better option is to apt-get install task-x-window-
system from the testing or unstable tree, which contain X 4.x.
Hope this helps.
