Try running the pppd that ships with 6.2 with 2.4.5 and you will know for
yourself why the latest/recommended version is required! (pppd will die as
soon as it starts! or is it before it starts ???)

I think it's because these proggies interact with the kernel modules in
some way so they are interdependent.
