>Don't know what is the point of the exercise ! Why have three >binaries (obviously doing the same thing) installed together? Hmm ! I wanted to avoid the un-necessary details, but now let me put it for you... I had installed RH6.2 in a office, some-time back. Every- thing was running fine, & all were happy to use the 'Joe', for their "text-only" office correspondence, due to it's close proximity to WordStar ! But alas ! Six months back, one of the office's "smart" executice brought a "Desi" text-editor from some-where & forced me to install it in their PC. So-far-so good ! The editor has function keys to do some Open-Save-Copy-Paste etc general functions. It was version 1.0 . ( I did'nt find any-thing worth-while in it.) A month back the executive brought version 2.0 of the same editor with some enhanced functions. But I was shocked to know (after installing the package), that the dumb programmer has changed some of the common function keys and assigned some diff new tasks to these keys. The 2 clerks in the office are reluctent to use the new version since they are used to the old one. And the exe- cutive is bent on installing the new version. Looking at the "bechaara" clerk's agony, I am trying to find out the sol'n, so that both the packages can be used at a time ! The problem is, both the packege's default installation directory is under \user\"desi" . ( And I do not have the source code for the package. I will be glad to have my hands on the dumb "creator" to "pour" some sense in his brain - if he has it at-all. ) > There may be conflicts in man and documentation. This is not much of a problem in my present problem. >It is not advisable to mix packages from different distros >(specially those with strong installation policies like deb- >ian and RH) ... and specially so, for the same program. I know ! But let me better equip my-self to such a situation. Who knows ? Considering the above narreted situation, I may need to do this kind of wierd "thing" some-where ! That's why I mentioned, "from purely technical point-of-view". >It can be done, but very selectively for something NOT avail- >able in any other distro (e.g. xsis.rpm from SuSE). NOT reco- >mmended as routine or multiple installations of same program. >The steps are: I downloaded both xsis.rpm and xsuseconfig.tgz files from Suse site. While xsis.rpm got installed very smoothly, xsuseconfig.tgz flashed some "unknown format..." etc errors. But suprisingly after "xf86config"urring, my Sis202 card was recognised and voilla ! X was running "cool" ! It was on RH5.2 !! :-) Thanks ! But why xsuseconfig.tgz flashes the error ? Thinking the donloaded file may have corrupted in the transfer, I re-dnloaded it, but again the same error message . Well, it bugs me ! >b) Inspect the contents. For rpm should not be difficult. For > others convert to .tar.gz (with alien, or other means) I have corrupted 'alien' on my CD. Will have to dnload it later. >i) Last word of advice : DO NOT do above. If you want to vary > with the default binary for your distro, at best compile > from the developer's tarball. And what, if we don not have the original tarball ? >The "group" must be a bunch of adventurous kids to even think >of such gimmicks, for no additional benefit :-( Sorry ! These are stuborn "elders" battling for the sake of prestige only! ;-( The kids are very much imersed in their "heavy weight" studies! >Most programs once installed, run the same for ALL distros. >Configurations and other things can change the look-and-feel. >But all of them are very much alterable. It is much better to >change personal configurations in dot and rc files. Transfered discsion of this point to a new thread - "Re-mapping keyboard keys in a software" . ( Purely for "archive" purpose ) HAND&N ! Thanks & Regards ! ~newlxuser _________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
