Without enough information about your hardware I can make only a few suggestions/observations.
1. Make sure the CD is clean 2. It is possible that the IDE interface is timing out. Check you cables 3. Depending on some PC manufacturers, some CD drives are set to Cable Select (CS) meaning that the drive selection is done by software. Check and see if the CD Drive is configured correctly, either as a slave on the first IDE connector or as a master in the second IDE connector.
