This is the reason in Karnataka Kannada is a comulsory language at
Schools :-) Due to this during my 5 years stay in Karnataka I had to
learn Kannada :-). Now I can read and understand little bit Kannada if
spoken slowly :-). Cannot talk though :-)

The above things are true in most of the south Indian states I believe.
